Adapted form Eish! The guy behind the flawless choreography of Friday night’s Miss World Kenya pageant at Safari Park, Tony Chirah, dishes on the newly crowned beauty queen Wangui Gitonga.

In a Facebook update, Chirah dishes on Wangui’s audition back story and calls her a “child of fortune”.

He wrote: “Wangui Gitonga is Miss World Kenya 2013. You may not know that Wangui was only escorting her sister to the Mombasa auditions with no intention of participating. She made a late decision to try it just for fun and missed her auditions photo shoot because she had to go back home to change. 

Chirah continued, “Wangui Gitonga was the solo qualifier we selected from the 2 days auditions in Mombasa and Voi. She entered the boot camp a shy girl but trained seriously to rise to be the top girl. It was a tough call for the Judges picking her out of the superbly talented 10 ladies but her win is absolutely well deserved. She is a combination of most of the required attributes to be the crown holder. The 1st and 2nd Runner Ups are the Brainy Lean Leah Tesfamariam and bold Sassy Sophisticated Sophia Umwiza.”

Maseno University Ranked Third as UON and KU Maintain Lead

Africa's Best: The latest Webometrics University ranking shows Maseno Uni has made a marked improvement beating JKUAT, Strathmore and Egerton universities. 

The University of Nairobi maintained its position as the best university in Kenya followed by Kenyatta University. UoN has been ranked 12^th best in Africa behind eight South African Universities, Makerere, Cairo University and the American University of Cairo.

The Ranking Web or Webometrics is the largest academic ranking of Higher Education Institutions. Every six months, an independent, objective, free, open scientific is performed by Spain’s Cybermetrics Lab. The methodology is largely based on number and quality of publications a university publishes on the web.

Maseno University Signs MOU with Japan's Nagasaki University

Kisumu Kenya: Maseno University has entered into a bilateral agreement with Nagasaki University of Japan for a period of five years that will see both institutions develop academic and educational cooperation and undertake activities that will promote mutual understanding between the two institutions.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that legalizes the five year renewable bilateral agreement was signed between the Vice Chancellor Maseno University, Prof. Dominic Makawiti and President of Nagasaki University, Shigeru Katamine on June 21 2013 in Nagasaki Japan. The Vice Chairman, Maseno University Council Daniel S. Omino was also
present to witness the signing ceremony.

The mandate of  the two institutions as signed in the MOU will include exchange of faculty members, researchers, administrative staff and students;  implementation of specific research projects;  lectures and symposia;  exchange of academic information and materials and the promotion of other academic cooperation as per the agreement.

The MOU further states that the development and implementation of specific activities will be separately negotiated and agreed between the relevant faculties, schools or institutes that will be implementing the agreement based on the laws and regulations of Kenya and Japan.

Kenya's Most Beautiful University Campuses

The expansive campus has maintained the up market Karen feel with large green spaces doted with trees. In spite of the buildings coming up in the campus, CUEA has tried to keep in harmony with the environment. 

The new library, which also houses the ultra-modern hall that housed the Jubilee Communication Centre during the elections, is arguably the best University library in the region. Everything is automated including borrowing and returning books. Now that’s digital. Most buildings including lecture halls have natural light minimizing on the use of too much energy for light.

Strathmore University

 

The University has really come of age, investing on the infrastructure and the students in a massive way. 

The architecture of some of the new buildings is simply breathtaking. The student centre/cafeteria and the Strathmore Business School building particularly stand out. But the lack of green spaces and enough trees steals the shine from Strathmore.

The oldest and biggest university in Kenya has kept its clean and grandeur look. You may not notice the beauty of UoN Main Campus from outside but once you are in, you forget you are in the CBD. 

The university is surrounded by a very well maintained green environment that one wonders how it is one of the most ancient universities in the country. Chiromo campus is also notably beautiful with a lot of trees and areas where students can chill outside and study. 

The iconic Fountain of Knowledge stands out though the JKM Library needs an upgrade.

Kenyatta University

 

This ‘University City’ has transformed over the last few years to become a pace setter in Kenya’s higher education. Visitors often get lost in the massive campus on Thika road. 

But thanks to the administration, the labeled street signs and direction boards give clear directions. The streets are clean and fences well manicured. The jewel of KU campus is the post-modern Library which lights up beautifully at night.

United States International University (USIU)

 

And the most beautiful University in Kenya goes to USIU. You get that calming feeling when you enter the campus. USIU has the best balance between infrastructure and the green spaces.

The lawn is always maintained plus the lecture halls are up to international standards equipped with multimedia equipment. Just like KU, USIU’s library is the icing on the cake.

Maseno University Library Selected To Participate In 'Sage Library Value’ Project

Maseno University library has been selected to participate in the ‘SAGE Library Value’ project. The project, ‘Library Value in the Developing World’ will investigate the value  of academic libraries for teaching and research staff at twelve institutions selected from countries classified by the world bank as low income and middle income economies.

 The survey will be carried out within the month of April 2013 and it aims to provide the academic library community in developing countries with a better understanding of the connections between academic libraries and academic departments, and to identify practical ways to enhance their working relationship.

Library Value in the Developing World will focus on the similarities and differences from numerous countries.     The research team will be working with and using case studies from a number of Universities which include: Maseno University, University of Cape Coast of Ghana, Indonesian Research Institute of Indonesia, and National Scientific Library of Georgia among other eight Universities.

As a result of this participation, Maseno University has been granted two years free institution-wide access to SAGE Journals, SAGE Knowledge and SAGE Research Methods.

Maseno University Student Leader Receives A Prestigious Nomination For An Exchange Program In The USA

A 3rd year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Marketing Option student, Ms. Diana Rakwach has been nominated for the prestigious Study of the United States Institute (SUSI) on civic engagement. The program will commence this summer at the Miami University in Hamilton, Ohio from June 29th to August 3rd, 2013.

After a series of interviews conducted by the Dean of Students, Diana who is also a student leader representing Kisumu City Campus College as Director, Welfare and Sports in the Students Organization of Maseno University (S.O.M.U) emerged the overall best student thus winning the trip to the USA.

In laying a foundation to the program, the Institute’s coursework will cover three distinct areas: civic knowledge, civic skills and civic action. The students will be exposed to an in-depth study of the American political system aimed at introducing local, state and national government structures to build a picture of a functioning democracy. The sessions will also outline the tenets of citizenship and the role and responsibilities of the ‘American birthright’ and to examine the American Civil Rights Movement as a public leadership case study in which participants will learn about community organizing, the impact of citizen action and how democracy allows for social change.

The host University played a unique role in the American Civil Rights movement as a training site for Freedom Summer Volunteers. Two freedom movement scholars will give presentations on the historical significance of Freedom Summer training in Oxford, Ohio. Participants will have a walking tour of the training site and memorial and have interactive afternoon workshops to support the content of morning sessions and strengthen participant’s leadership skills within

the context of civic engagement. There will be a number of civic site visits and experiences that complement workshops and course work and the participants will also have time with community leaders and organizers, attend city council meetings, and visit a revitalized Cincinnati neighborhood, the Ohio State House besides meeting elected representatives and taking part in weekly community service experiences with one of the partner agencies.

After the academic and practical foundation, each participant will produce a Civic Action Plan on a comprehensive project that will provide a detailed outline of a public issue important to them and the subsequent applications of the civic skills needed to address the issue in the home country.

In addition to the academic residency at the Hamilton, Ohio campus of Miami University, participants will take part in a conference at Tufts University in Boston and visit Washington DC.

Diana is excited about the nomination and will utilize the opportunity to develop her leadership skills further. She is eyeing national leadership positions in Kenya and therefore the opportunity came the right time. This program is all expense paid for including visa processing, international air ticket and leaving expenses while on the program in the U.S.

Diana who has also been a leader from her early days in school stresses that her greatest motivation is to serve-a perfect vision for the study award candidate!
