Kenyan Govt Declares Tuesday May 3 Public Holiday To Mark Idd-Ul-Fitr

Kenya's Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has declared Tuesday May 3 a public holiday to Mark Idd-ul-Fitr, celebrating the end of Ramadhan.

He made the announcement in a special gazette notice issued on Tuesday.

The gazettement read:

“It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Co-ordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Tuesday, the 3rd May 2022, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” read the notice.

Kenyan High Court stops The University of Nairobi from implementing planned reforms

The High Court has stopped the University of Nairobi (UoN) from implementing planned reforms pending hearing and determination of a case filed by the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU).

UASU accused the UoN administration of developing the reforms without the input of key stakeholders such as the students’ association, the Commission for University Education, the Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Education.

The union, in a petition filed through lawyer Koceyo Titus, argued that the new structure is not anchored in law and has led to loss of jobs by UASU members as well as loss of courses in complete disregard to the students.

“…the Petitioner is a necessary key stakeholder on matters that touch on administration of public universities as it directly affects the services rendered by its members and the terms of service of its members,” read court papers.

“…the Respondent willfully failed to give policy guidance to the Vice Chancellor of the 1st Respondent so much that the intended reforms have no policy framework nor transitional guidelines from the current governance structure which has caused anxiety, disquiet and confusion in the university.”

Lady Justice Maureen Onyango, in her ruling, set the matter for hearing on July 28, 2021, adding that: “In the meantime, conservatory orders are granted pending Inter parties hearing of the application.”

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha recently suspended the proposed administrative changes in the University of Nairobi saying the changes must follow the law.

While lauding the move by various universities to ensure their academic and administrative structures conform to their financial muscle, Prof. Magoha termed the proposed changes at UoN illegal.

The changes by the university council touched on reorganisation of the administrative structure, which included abolishing 24 constituent colleges from the normal 35 to 11.

The changes meant to also abolish five offices of the deputy vice-chancellors and replace it with two positions of associate vice chancellors.

The University of Nairobi wishes to inform all students from the above colleges who qualified for the award of various degrees and diplomas at the end of last academic year (2017/2018) and members of the public, that the 59th Graduation Ceremony will be held on Friday, September 14, 2018 commencing at 8.00 a.m. at the Chancellor’s Court next to Central Catering Unit, Main Campus.  

The following is pertinent information:

CLEARANCE OF FEES AND ORDER OF NAMES:

Only those who will have completed paying the fees due to the University by Tuesday August 14, 2018 will be allowed to graduate.  ALL graduands are advised to confirm the order of their name as it will appear in the graduation list with their respective Deans/Directors.

GRADUATION/CONVOCATION FEE

Each graduand will be required to obtain a clearance certificate from the relevant College Registrar upon clearance with the respective Department/Faculty/Institute/School/Centre, Library, Halls of Residence, Games Department, Finance and pay a compulsory Graduation/Convocation fee of Kshs. 1,000/=.

HIRE OR PURCHASE OF ACADEMIC ATTIRE

The academic attire will be available for hire between Monday, September 3, 2018 to Thursday,  September 13, 2018 from the respective College Registrars for Diploma, Bachelors, PGD and Masters graduands and from the Deputy Registrar, Central Examinations Centre for PhD graduands at a non-refundable fee of Kshs. 4,000/= per set.  Those intending to purchase the academic attire should contact the Deputy Registrar, Central Examinations Centre, Chiromo Campus for details.  The hired academic attire must be returned to the respective offices by Friday, September 28, 2018 to avoid being surcharged.

REHEARSAL

The rehearsal is an integral part of the Graduation Ceremony.  All Graduands intending to participate in the ceremony must attend the rehearsal on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 10.00 a.m. at the Chancellor’s Court next to the Central Catering Unit, Main Campus.

INVITATION 

(i) While hiring or purchasing the Academic Dress, each graduand will be issued with two invitation cards for two guests.  Persons without invitation cards will not be allowed   into the Chancellor’s Court on the Graduation Day.

Kenyan Certificate Of Primary Education Examinations – KCPE Exams 2018

The 2018 Kenyan certificate of Primary Education Exams (KCPE Exams 2018) will begin on Monday 30^th October 2018, (with rehearsals on the 29^th). The exams will then end on Wednesday 1^st November 2018. Students will then be expected to get their results before close of the year.

According to data from KNEC, a total of 1.06 million students registered as 2018 KCPE candidates, with 529, 124 being girls, and 531,668 being boys.

The 889,000 candidates who sat this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams will know their results on December 29.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) also said in a statement Wednesday that letters would be sent to candidates whose results are withheld.

However, schools will not be ranked this year according to their performance following a recent ban by Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi.

Nairobi Kenya: The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has called off the teachers' strike after agreeing a pay deal with the government.

The teachers will return to class with a Sh16.2 billion deal spread out in two phases, as had earlier been agreed between them and the government.

"We have assessed the government offer over time and we are satisfied that we have put in place proper mechanisms through engagement... with that in mind, the National Executive Council has now authorised the secretary general to call off the strike,” said Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) chairman Wilson Sossion.

Breaking News: Kenyan Government Oders Shut Down of All Public Primary Schools

Nairobi Kenya: The government has ordered the immediate closure of all public primary schools following the teachers’ strike, which is now in its fourth week.

Education Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi said primary schools will remain shut until the standoff between the tutors and the government is resolved.

“The primary school teachers continue to participate in an illegal and unconstitutional strike having refused to comply with the legal directives of the Teachers Service Commission – in other words their employer – which is in breach of their code of employment and law,” he explained.

Kaimenyi however clarified that students in secondary schools will continue with their studies following a deal struck with the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).

“The government appreciates the agreement made between the Teachers Service Commission and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers that has returned normalcy to post primary institutions,” Kaimenyi said.

Even as he announced the closure of all public primary schools, Kaimenyi sought to assure those sitting their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams this year that arrangements have been made to ensure they are not disenfranchised.

“The government assures all class eight pupils, parents and the public that adequate arrangements have been made to address their situation with respect to their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations,” he said.

Kaimenyi’s assurances have however been criticised by the Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) which threatened to seek legal intervention if the schools are not reopened within seven days.

“That the closure does not affect pupils in private schools, sitting for the same national examinations, can only amount to discrimination against majority pupils from humble backgrounds,” COFEK Program Officer Margaret Obondo indicated.

Kenyan Sports Scholarships: SportOn Launched a Scholarship Package to Benefit Needy but Talented Sports Youths

This follows the launch of the SportOn Sports Scholarship programme, which is an initiative of the Nation Media Group bi-weekly publication SportOn.

The launch, which was graced by Nation Media Group CEO Linus Gitahi, was held at the University of Nairobi grounds.
