Ministry Of Education Updates: Teacher Trainees Wanted

The Ministry of Education will by July this year recruit 8,600 trainee P1 teachers for enrollment in public teacher training colleges in the country. 

It has called for all applicants wishing to be considered for training as P1 teachers to download application forms from its website www.education.go.ke and apply before 21st May 2013 and register in their respective zonal offices. 

This is contained in a circular to Directors of Education.

The selection criterion is provided by the Teachers Service Commission depending on the teacher needs of every district.

There are 22 Public Primary Teacher Training Colleges in the country three of which carter for blind and deaf teacher trainees. These include Mosoriot, Machakos and Asumbi. 

According to Ag Director for Basic Education, Mrs. Margaret Okemo,  applications from visually and hearing impaired applicants will be excluded from the computer selection exercise and will require to have been endorsed by the respective District Education Officers.  The prospective applicants with special needs should have a Minimum of C- 

The two year course which successful applicants will undergo is intended to prepare prospective teachers to: provide suitable learning opportunities and develop learners’ communicative skills; develop the child’s ability in critical and imaginative thinking, in problem solving and self-expression; develop positive attitude in children to the moral and religious values of their community and also a sense of citizenship; have a national consciousness for educational excellence; develop special interests, skills and initiative as a teacher; to foster in an appreciation and respect for Kenya’s rich and varied cultural heritage and also develop an awareness, appreciation and ability to utilize innovation in the field of education

Requirements for registration is a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education mean grade “C” plain with a minimum grade of D(plain) in mathematics and a C-(minus) in English. The minimum grade for applicants who are visually and hearing impaired is a C- . 

The registration exercise is free and registration will be done in all zonal education offices.
Successful applicants will have their letters dispatched to the zones by August to enable them prepare to join college in September this year.
